Street Leading to Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg Named After Mahatma Gandhi

Winnipeg, Canada: A part of the York Avenue leading to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg, capital of Manitoba province, in Canada got its new name on 15 August 2013. The street was named Honorary Mahatma Gandhi Way, after the name of Mahatma Gandhi. The street was named so on the occasion of India’s 67th Independence Day.

The Mayor of Winnipeg Sam Katz explained that the street was named so after an individual who is synonymous with the struggle for human rights. He explained that Mahatma Gandhi was a symbolic figure and so the street was named after him.

It is worth noticing here that the name of Mahatma Gandhi was initially set aside for a street in Transcona. However the request from the Mahatma Gandhi Centre asked for the naming of street near the museum.
