UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon appointed Abdoulaye Bathily as Deputy Head of UN Mission in Mali

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 9 July 2013 announced the appointment of Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal as his new Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

A brief insight into Abdoulaye Bathily’s Career
• Abdoulaye Bathily has been serving as Senior Minister in the office of the President of Senegal since 2012.
• Prior to his role as Senior Minister he has served as minister of the environment and as minister of energy.
• He also served as a Member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, member of the African Union Contact Group on the crisis in Madagascar, and participated in various conflict resolution missions to countries in West Africa, including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Niger, Guinea and Mali.

In April 2013 the Security Council has given its approval for the 12600-strong MINUSMA to take over from the African-led force, authorizing the blue helmets to use all necessary means to carry out security-related stabilization tasks, protect civilians, UN staff and cultural artefacts and create the conditions for provision of humanitarian aid.

With the appointment of Abdoulaye Bathily the UN Secretary-General also appointed David Gressly of the United States as Deputy Special Representative at MINUSMA .

About David Gressly
• David Gressly will serve as UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
• He has more than 20 years of experience with the UN system, He served with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in various capacities, including in Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea and Senegal.
• He served as Regional Coordinator in the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) from 2008 to 2011; and subsequently as Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel from 2012 to 2013, where he led the humanitarian response to the food security and nutrition crisis in the region last year.
• Recently, Gressly has served as Head of Mission for the UN Office in Mali (UNOM) and following the arrival of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Mali, Albert Gerard (Bert) Koenders, has served as Acting Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in MINUSMA.

About United Nations Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA)
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was established by Security Council resolution 2100 of 25 April 2013. As per the resolution, the mission is meant to support the political process and carry out a number of security-related stabilization tasks, with a focus on major population centres and lines of communication, protecting civilians, human rights monitoring, the creation of conditions for the provision of humanitarian assistance and the return of displaced persons, the extension of State authority and the preparation of free, inclusive and peaceful elections.
MINUSMA's core task is to support the political process in Mali, in close coordination with the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
