Nasscom, the IT software services industry body on 5 July 2013
appointed R. Chandrasekhar, the former Secretary Department of
Telecommunications (DoT), as its president.
60 years old, R. Chandrashekhar will be succeeding current Nasscom President Som Mittal, whose tenure expires in January 2014. R. Chandrashekhar retired from DOT in March 2013 and had also declined an offer to head the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) which is India's premier technical intelligence agency.
He is a 1975 batch IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh and as the Secretary of DoT, drove policies around licensing, spectrum management, National Broadband Plan and the National Telecom Policy 2012, among others. During his career with the Government, he held a variety of key assignments many of them relating to the information and communications technology sector, both in the Government of India and Andhra Pradesh Government.
Chandrashekhar will take charge of Nasscom at a difficult time since growth for the100 billion dollars industry has slowed and will have the responsibility to take forward Nasscom’s ambitious target of grossing 300 billion dollars (18 lakh crore Rupees) revenue for the IT sector by 2020.
Protectionist regulations, such as the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 introduced in the United States in April 2013 are creating barriers for Indian companies to operate there and it will be a major challenge for R. Chandrasekhar.
