Earthquake of magnitude 6.9 on Richter Scale stuck Wellington, the Capital of New Zealand on 20 July 2013. As per the details of the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck under the Cook Strait 57 kilometres southwest of Wellington at a depth of 10 kilometres.
New Zealand is part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire that receives regular seismic activity. Earlier in 2011, a severe earthquake occurred in the city of Christchurch in which 185 people were killed.

Apart from the quake in Wellington, an earthquake that measured 5.2 on the Richter scale also struck Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and some areas in northern region on 21 July 2013. The epicenter of this quake was 95 km northwest of province's Chitral district in the mountainous region of Hindu Kush, along Pakistan-Afghanistan border, as per the reports of Pakistan Meteorological Department.
