8 June: World Ocean Day
World Ocean Day was celebrated across the world on 8 June 2013. Together, we have the Power to Protect the Oceans is the theme for 2013.
For the first time, World Ocean day was introduced in 1992 at Rio de Janeiro with a motive of raising awareness of people towards the crucial role that sea plays in our lives. The official designation of World Oceans Day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans.
In the year 2008, United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 8 June as the World Oceans Day from 2009 onwards with its resolution number 63/111, Paragraph 171.
Oceans are a critical part of our biosphere and are essential for food security, health and survival of all lives and are responsible to power the climate of the world. United Nations Has Issued “World Oceans Day” Stamps Whimsical Images Highlight Important Subject.
