Rotary International's India National Polio Plus Committee in the Month
of May 2013 has offered to take Muslim Ulamas from Uttar Pradesh to
Pakistan to persuade people and advocate polio vaccination.
The decision to offer help was taken in light of the recent killing of a polio vaccinator in Pakistan's Peshawar city that enforced WHO to suspend the vaccination campaign in the city provisionally.
It is important here to note that on 28 May 2013 a female polio vaccinator was killed and another was injured when two gunmen opened fire at the vaccinators on the suburbs of Peshawar the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The vaccinators were administering polio drops to children in the region.
The former Director of Rotary International and chairperson of Rotary International's Muslim Ulama Committee, Ashok Mahajan, asked Pakistan's national polio committee chairperson if the country requires any assistance from the Ulama committee for advocacy of polio the Ulamas are ready to travel to Pakistan and stand for the cause of polio eradication in Pakistan.
