Odisha reopened White Tiger Safari at Nandankanan

The White Tiger Safari at the Nandankanan Zoological Park, Odisha was reopened on 4 June 2013. The safari was shut down for over a period of one month due to safety reasons.

The park officials closed the safari after a seven year old tiger walked into it on 29 April 2013 and the decision of reopening the safari came up after the return of the tiger. Nandankanan is provides first-of-its-kind white tiger safari in the country. The safari is the home of about 24 tigers of which eight are white.

Nandankanan Zoological Park lies in the vicinity of Kanija Lake amidst the natural beauty of natural forests adjacent to Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctury. This site covers a portion of Krishnanagar and Jujhagarh Demarcated Protected Forests (DPF). Nandankanan, in mythology, define the ecstatic but imaginary beauty of the celestial garden. This park is a house of 126 species of animals that include 40 mammals, 56 birds and 24 reptiles.

Nandankanan is the only zoo in India with the credit of having Patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas), Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximus) and Open-billed Stork (Anastomus oscitans).
