North Korea on 6 June 2013 proposed talks with the South Korea on several issues like reopening a shuttered Joint Industrial Complex as well as resuming the cross-border family reunions.
The surprise move of North Korea came up by the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea (CPRK). This step, followed months of military tensions between the two sides after North triggered tensions by the Nuclear Test conducted in February 2013. CPRK is a state body responsible for relations with South Korea. CPRK doesn’t cleared that the talks will take place at what levels at which place or on which date and announced that it depends at the convenience of South Korea.
In its initial phase of discussions the two sides would discuss on the future of Kaesong Joint Industrial Zone that was shut during the recent tensions. Discussions on resumption of cross-border tours to the North’s Mount Kumgang resort would also be made.
The Kaesong factory complex is seen as a symbol of North-South co-operation. Around 53,000 North Korean workers are employed there by more than 120 South Korean factories. The zone is a key source of revenue for the North and the biggest contributor to inter-Korean trade.
