Gold Coins Dating Back to the Gupta Period Unearthed in West Bengal

Gold coins said to be from Gupta period were unearthed on 1 June 2013 at Ahiran in West Bengal Murshidabad district. These coins were found during the construction of National Highway 34. The coins date back to fourth century A.D.

The gold coins from Gupta period are second discovery in West Bengal from the early colonial period. The first one was the discovery at Kalighat. Therefore, the discovery is considered as extremely important. Historians explained that the discovery will help in presenting the clues about the reach of Gupta Empire. This discovery will also facilitate new scope in the research of Gupta coinage system in India.

The gold coins from that era were discovered from the place near Gonkar and Hatpara areas under Sagardighi police station. As of now, 11 coins have been unearthed and all these have been kept at the local police station.

The discovery of the coins will help the historians in exploring Murshidabad’s history. Murshidabad’s history shows the evidences of settlements from 1st and 2nd century A.D. during Kushana period and then Sashanka period which dated back to 6th and 7th century A.D.

These coins were those of the imperial series during regime of Gupta kings Chandragupta and Samudragupta. The coins had king with Garuda Stambha on his right and with a fire altar, on one side and image of goddess Lakshmi on the other side.
