Leader of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N), Ayaz Sadiq was on 3
June 2013 elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
He won with 258 votes out of 313 votes which were cast in the election
of a Speaker in lower house of the Parliament of Pakistan. The strength
of National Assembly of Pakistan is 342.
His opponents, Shaheryar Afridi of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf and SA Iqbal Qadri of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement got just 31 and 23 votes respectively. The outgoing Speaker Fehmida Mirza administered the oath of Speaker’s office to Ayaz Sadiq. He became the 19th Speaker of the lower house of the Parliament of Pakistan.
PML-N nominee Murtaza Javed Abbasi was elected as deputy speaker of the National Assembly. He got a total of 258 votes.
About Ayaz Sadiq
• Ayaz Sadiq was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1954.
• He has been elected to the Parliament of Pakistan three times since 2002. He remained the Member of National Assembly (MNA) for three consecutive terms, i.e., from 2002-2008, 2008-2013 and now, from 2013-2018.
• He started the political career in 1990s from Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
• He left PTI in the year 1998 and joined Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N).
• In the 2002 general election in Pakistan, he successfully contested against Imran Khan from NA-122 Lahore-V.
Article 53 of the Constitution of Pakistan: Election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to the National Assembly
The Article 53 of the Constitution of Pakistan defines about the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker to the National Assembly. According to Article 53 of the Pakistan’s Constitution, after a general election, the National Assembly shall, at its first meeting and to the exclusion of any other business, elect from amongst its members a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker. Before entering upon office, a member elected as Speaker or Deputy Speaker should take the oath in the form set out in the Third Schedule.
It is important to note that the Election Commission of Pakistan on 14 May 2013 announced results of 272 National Assembly seats, with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz heading the count with 126 seats, followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party with 31 seats.
